Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) today announced a significant shift in its internal leadership landscape. Tony Vinciquerra, Chair and Chief Executive Officer since 2017, will retire on January 2, 2025. Ravi Ahuja, the accomplished Chairman of Global Television Studios and President and COO of SPE, will be promoted to President and CEO.
Even after giving up the chair, Vinciquerra would continue to influence SPE, a consequence of his remaining as a non-executive Chairman through to the end of 2025.
Sony Group Corporation Chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida heralded Vinciquerra’s “profound insight and deep expertise in the entertainment industry as instrumental in SPE’s incredible transformation over the last decade”. Yoshida said, “Tony’s strategic vision was instrumental in integrating SPE into Sony’s broader entertainment strategy.”.
Meet Ravi Ahuja: Ravi Ahuja, who joined SPE in 2021, has steered the company through the volatile industry past created for it, setting it up for growth going forward. “Ravi’s deep experience with some of the world’s leading entertainment companies will serve him well in his new role,” Yoshida said.
Reflecting on his tenure, Vinciquerra said that he appreciated the chance to lead SPE through its most transformative times ever. Together, we have faced tremendous challenges and consistently showcased our passion and resilience as a community, he said.
Under his tenure, SPE faced some strong trials; among them includes this global pandemic COVID-19 and, in recent months, severe strikes by SAG-AFTRA and WGA that knocked out a major shock to the Hollywood film industry. However, despite these trials, SPE has had a streak of profit growth for five consecutive years. According to analysts, this is largely due to strategic moves made by acquiring Crunchyroll as a premium platform for anime and shedding international cable networks in markets that shrank.
