[LONDON] During his first overseas trip as Canada’s PM, Mark Carney gave a speech warning Canadians that the economy must strive to build new relationships instead of heavily relying on the United States.
Carney is in the UK to discuss bilateral relations with the British PM Starmer, as well as Emmanuel Macron from France. This visit follows Donald Trump’s warning to Canada; who, in an off-the-cuff remark suggested Canada could join the US, having previously threatened to destroy Canada’s economy.
After succeeding Justin Trudeau, Carney decided to visit London and Paris on his first trip rather than the United States. After meeting Prime Minister Starmer, Carney gave a talk in London where he encouraged journalists to rethink Canada’s position as a single nation which would enable them to build more than one major trading partnership and further improve security in the region.
As a former Bank of England governor, Carney expressed his concern saying, “Our current trade and security relations are overly reliant on the United States. Diversification is essential,” He pointed out his reasoning for prioritising London and Paris over other destinations.
